The Application and Limitations of Earthquake resistant technology
Abstract:

This dissertation sets out to examine and assess the qualities of rural housing in Gujarat, India in the context of earthquake resistance. There will be a focus on the qualities of the design, structure, spatial considerations and materiality of these dwellings whilst also inspecting the earthquake building guidelines produced by the Indian government. It will begin with an understanding of structural fundamentals in order to contextualise analysis of the structures damaged by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake which occurred in Gujarat, 2001. Through the exploration and analysis of the fundamental structural properties towards existing rural dwelling in Gujarat, I present the guidelines which aim to reduce the impact of Earthquakes upon these buildings, considering economic, social and cultural limitations. Sustainability is key in restoring culture and also to allow rural communities to grow; therefore, avoiding unnecessary urbanisation.
