BRIEF
This is a third year project. A derelict docklands church in Sheerness on Sea is in need of revitalisation. The area is in decline and needs to be revived. We were tasked with turning the Church into a museum dedicated to the naval and aviation history in the local area, and in doing so, the church can be extended and adapted to meet these functions. The museum must accommodate the local community and create a new learning experience in the area.
CONCEPT
The concept of this project is based around fortification. My idea reinterpreted old forts in the local area as a medium to protect and preserve the church and its embedded history. My historic research was based on old maps depicting the form of these old forts, located very close to the church itself. Along with the form of the local gun towers, my design allowed for a juxtaposition of the strength and delicacy. The journey itself within the design was an idea to promote learning, engaging in different phases of history at different intimacies as you progress through the building.
